Morality and What It Means To Me...

A saying that comes to mind as I thought about this posting is, "Is it important to do things right or is it important to do the right things".

To me, morality is your own code of conduct (how and why we do things); it is how you live your life. It is the way that you treat others. It is the small and large decisions that you make that then affect the lives of everyone around you, as well as your own. Morality is very powerful, and you can not deny its existence. We make many of our decisions based on our own personal code of conduct. Every decision that we make has consequences. These consequences can be either positive or negative. They can have either a large or small impact on our future, or the futures of others. How we make decisions is often dependent upon our morals and experience gained from previous moral questions we faced.

I think that everyone’s morals are different.  They could have similar foundation and context but they are unique to each of us. Our morals evolve and develop within us, as we encounter new experiences and situations along our life journey. Our morals also, evolve and develop as our understanding of culture, community, and religion expands.  These evolutions are like revisions to a paper. After each revision the clarity, depth, and definition becomes enhanced and improved.

I personally do not think enough about the consequences for all of my decisions but I do understand that there are consequences for those decisions. I understand the need to reflect and think through my moral context and my world view. As I think about some of my life experiences, I can understand how these experiences have changed me into whom I am today. This change is developing and evolving my moral understanding, context, and knowledge foundation which will impact my future moral decisions.

The slides about morality, challenged me to think about things in a larger context and to think about the impact of possible consequences of my decisions. All together I think I am learning a lot, it is making me reflect on my past experience and decisions. I am also enjoying the online structure of this class.

  1. Very well put, Adam. I agree with your train of thought--every day we live presents us with a new opportunity for us to evolve into someone we were not yesterday. The consequences of our actions have a direct impact on who we are as humans.

Thanks for the clear definition and meaning. It has helped me understand the concept even more.

  2. I also agree with you Adam. Especially when you say the things about everyone has different morals. It was very nicely written.

  3. I liked your idea of a moral decision being one which could have either a positive or negative effect on people around you. When you talked about the revisions made on our morals (great analogy by the way) is there ever an instance in your mind that our morals are completely erased or changed? It seemed to me that you were talking about clarifying what we already knew or believed. Wouldn't it be just as possible that a revision could be made by changing the meaning entirely and therefore changing our moral values entirely?

  4. Yes, I do believe that some experience that we witness can sometimes change our whole meaning of life and the morals that we live by.
